Technical SEO Basics: The 10-Point Checklist Every Small Business Website Needs

If you run a small business, technical SEO is the foundation that determines whether Google can find, understand, and rank your website. You can write the best content in your industry, but if search engines can't crawl your pages, load them quickly, or interpret them correctly, that content will never reach your audience. The good news? The fundamentals aren't complicated. This 10-point checklist covers everything a small business website needs to be technically search-engine-ready.

1. HTTPS everywhere

Every page on your site must load over HTTPS, not HTTP. Google treats HTTPS as a ranking signal, and browsers now flag non-HTTPS pages as "not secure" — which destroys visitor trust. Obtain an SSL/TLS certificate (free options like Let's Encrypt work perfectly), install it on your server, and set up a 301 redirect from every HTTP URL to its HTTPS equivalent.

2. Indexation and robots.txt

Your robots.txt file tells search engine crawlers which pages they may access. Place it at the root of your domain. Make sure it's not accidentally blocking important pages. At minimum, it should allow crawling of your entire site and point to your XML sitemap.

3. XML sitemap submitted to Search Console

An XML sitemap is a file that lists all the URLs on your site you want search engines to index. It acts as a roadmap for crawlers, especially useful for new sites or sites with deep page hierarchies. Generate one automatically, submit it in Google Search Console under "Sitemaps," and monitor the coverage report.

4. Page speed and Core Web Vitals

Google measures real-world user experience through Core Web Vitals. These three metrics directly affect rankings: LCP (Largest Contentful Paint) under 2.5 seconds, INP (Interaction to Next Paint) under 200ms, and CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift) under 0.1. Test your pages with Google's PageSpeed Insights and the Core Web Vitals report in Search Console.

5. Mobile-friendliness

Google uses mobile-first indexing, meaning it crawls and indexes the mobile version of your site first. Ensure your layout is responsive, text is readable without zooming, tap targets are at least 48px, and there's no horizontal scrolling. A viewport meta tag is essential on every page.

6. Unique title tags and meta descriptions

Every page should have a unique, descriptive title tag (under 60 characters) and meta description (under 155 characters). Title tags are a direct ranking factor; meta descriptions influence click-through rates. Include your primary keyword near the beginning of the title and write meta descriptions as compelling ad copy.

7. Canonical tags to prevent duplicate content

Canonical tags (rel="canonical") tell search engines which version of a page is the master copy when multiple URLs contain identical or similar content. Add a self-referencing canonical tag to every page pointing to its own URL.

8. Structured data (Organization, LocalBusiness, Article schema)

Structured data (schema.org markup in JSON-LD format) helps search engines understand your content and can earn rich results. For a small business website, implement at least Organization schema, LocalBusiness schema (if you have a physical location), and Article schema for blog posts.

9. Fix broken links and use 301 redirects

Broken links (404 errors) waste crawl budget and create a poor user experience. Regularly scan your site for broken links. When you delete or move a page, set up a 301 redirect to the most relevant replacement URL. Avoid redirect chains — always redirect directly to the final destination.

10. Strong internal linking

Internal links help search engines discover pages, understand your site structure, and distribute ranking authority. Every important page should be reachable within 3 clicks from the homepage. Use descriptive anchor text that includes relevant keywords.
